Release Date, Pricing and Demo #
Star Fox launches June 25, 2026 as a Switch 2 exclusive, priced at $49.99 digital / $59.99 physical via the Nintendo eShop. A free demo covering the tutorial and the Meteo campaign stage is available now.
The game was announced at the June 2026 Nintendo Direct, with extended gameplay shown at Nintendo Treehouse.
Gameplay Changes from N64 #
Built on Velan Studios’ custom “Viper Engine,” Star Fox runs at a locked 60 FPS with high-fidelity real-time cinematics. The third-person rail shooter core is intact, but several key features are new:
- Joy-Con 2 Mouse Targeting: Precision aiming during dogfights using the Joy-Con 2’s mouse mode — Nintendo
- Co-op Mode: Two-player campaign with one pilot and one gunner, available locally or online via GameShare
- 4v4 Battle Mode: Star Fox vs Star Wolf team dogfights across three maps with different objectives (zone control, crystal collection, cargo retrieval) — Nintendo
- Challenge Mode: Replayable stages with new objectives after completing the campaign
- N64 Wireless Controller compatible
The community noticed the gameplay “nailed the feel” of the original (+300 on r/starfox), calling it “a ton of fun” (+750) — r/starfox.
Story Overhaul #
This is the fifth retelling of the Lylat Wars, but it’s the most ambitious yet. The script has been completely overhauled with full voice acting and cinematic cutscene direction. IGN’s preview notes that the game builds “a greater sense of camaraderie amongst the crew” with characters responding to each other naturally — Slippy now chimes in during Falco’s G-Diffuser complaints, and Fox reacts to Peppy’s constant mentions of James McCloud.
Key story changes:
- Expanded script with never-before-seen mission briefings between stages
- New voice cast — Wolf O’Donnell’s performance now matches his Assault-era characterization (community response: “Wolf sounds legions better”)
- Takaya Imamura (original Star Fox 64 graphic designer) was “choked up” by the new aesthetic — IGN
- Alternative route handling on Venom 2 expected by the community — r/starfox
The original 64 graphic designer’s positive reaction underscores how faithful this remake aims to be while still pushing the presentation forward.
Multiplayer and Social Features #
Star Fox introduces several new multiplayer modes:
- 4v4 Battle Mode: Team Star Fox vs Team Star Wolf in objective-based dogfights across Corneria (zone control), Fichina (crystal collection), and Sector Y (cargo retrieval). Online via private matches or matchmaking with bots to fill slots.
- Co-op Campaign: One player pilots, the other operates weapons. Available via local play or GameShare online.
- GameShare: Up to four players can play together with a single copy — Nintendo
- GameChat Integration: AR filters and character avatars using the Switch 2 camera. IGN noted: “Fox blinked when I did, the mouth movement was surprisingly good” — IGN
- Nintendo Music: 10 tracks available on the Nintendo Music app at launch — Nintendo
Community Reception #

- Post-launch content plans (DLC, additional multiplayer maps)
- Performance on original Switch via backward compatibility (GameShare mode works cross-gen, but full campaign is Switch 2 exclusive)
