Star Fox Returns — A New Mission on Switch 2 #
Nintendo revealed the launch trailer for Star Fox during the May 2026 Star Fox Direct, and the full release is almost here. The game launches June 25, 2026 — exclusively for Nintendo Switch 2. This isn’t a port or a simple remaster; it’s a ground-up reimagining of the N64 classic with modern visuals, new gameplay mechanics, and full online features.
The trailer shows Fox McCloud tearing through space, soaring across planets and knocking foes out of the sky in high-speed dogfights. The visual overhaul is dramatic — what was polygonal on the N64 is now a vibrant, detailed world that brings the Lylat System to life.

Campaign Mode — Fly Solo or With a Friend #
The campaign follows the classic Star Fox structure but with new twists:
- Branching paths — your mission choices and performance determine which levels you access, with multiple endings
- Online co-op via GameShare — one player pilots the Arwing, the other mans the guns
- Local co-op — same-screen co-op on the couch
- Mouse-Controlled Targeting — aim by tilting the Joy-Con 2, making precision shots feel intuitive
The branching path system encourages replayability. Miss a secret route on your first playthrough and you’ll discover new stages, encounters, and story beats on your second run.
“In Campaign Mode, you’ll soar across the Lylat System as you accept dangerous missions and discover branching paths to uncover every piece of the story.”

Battle Mode — 4v4 Aerial Mayhem #
The competitive side of Star Fox features 4v4 dogfights across three dedicated stages:
- Play online with friends or random matchmaking
- GameShare support: host 4 players with a single copy
- Voice chat via GameChat
- USB camera support for face-averse avatars in GameChat
The game’s Battle Mode feeds into the “pick up and play” philosophy — quick matches, low barrier to entry, deep enough for competitive play.
Mouse-Controlled Targeting — The Joy-Con 2’s Killer Feature? #
The most interesting mechanical addition is Mouse-Controlled Targeting. The Joy-Con 2 controller doubles as a mouse when placed on a flat surface — similar to the Switch 2’s tech demo — and Star Fox is one of the first games to fully implement it.
In practice: you fly with the left analog stick and aim by moving the right Joy-Con on a desk or mouse pad. The result is significantly more precise than traditional dual-stick aiming in a flight game — more akin to a PC flight sim with a joystick and mouse combination.
Pre-Order and Pricing #
As of June 11, Star Fox is available for pre-order on the Nintendo eShop. Standard pricing for Switch 2 titles applies:
- Digital: $69.99 / €69.99
- Physical: $69.99 / €69.99 (standard retail)
Nintendo has not announced a special or collector’s edition at this time.
3D Classics Brought to Life #
Star Fox on N64 was a technical marvel — the Super FX chip pushed the console to its limits. The Switch 2 version brings that ambition into the modern era with:
- 4K resolution on compatible TVs
- 60 fps target
- Completely rebuilt character models and environments
- Orchestrated soundtrack (10 classic tracks also added to Nintendo Music)
The Bottom Line #
Star Fox on Switch 2 looks like the comeback the series has needed since Star Fox 64. With two weeks until launch, the combination of faithful campaign design, competitive Battle Mode, and the innovative mouse-controlled aiming makes this a strong launch window title for the Switch 2.
