How to Fix the Ranni's Rise Invisible Barrier in Elden Ring
Talk to all three spectral NPCs downstairs first. Exhaust all dialogue with Blaidd, Seluvis, and Iji. Return to Ranni at the top of the tower. The barrier lifts once Ranni mentions her slumber.
I’ve been there. You finally find Ranni, agree to serve her, and then realize you’re trapped in a tower with an invisible wall blocking every exit. It feels like a game-breaking bug, especially since fast travel is disabled. But trust me, you aren’t glitched—the game is just forcing you to do your homework before you can leave.
The invisible wall is not a bug #
If you are seeing a shimmering barrier or simply hitting an invisible wall when trying to leave the tower, don’t bother reloading your save or looking for a patch. This is an intentional progression lock built into the quest. Elden Ring frequently uses these types of barriers to ensure you don’t miss critical plot points or NPC introductions that are required for the quest to progress.
Why you cannot fast travel #
The most frustrating part of this “trap” is that your ability to teleport is completely disabled while the barrier is active. I tried to fast travel back to the Liurnia Lake Shore and found the option greyed out. This is the game’s way of making sure you actually walk downstairs and meet the people Ranni wants you to talk to. You cannot bypass this by dying or using the elevator; you have to trigger the dialogue.
Step-by-step how to lift the barrier #
To get out of Ranni’s Rise, you need to follow a specific sequence of conversations. If you miss even one person, you stay trapped. Here is exactly what you need to do to break the seal:
- Leave the top room and head downstairs to the ground level of the tower.
- Find and speak to all three spectral NPCs: Blaidd, Seluvis, and War Counselor Iji.
- Speak to each of them until their dialogue begins to repeat.
- Once you’ve exhausted their conversations, climb back up to the top of the tower.
- Speak to Ranni one last time. She will mention that she is entering a “slumber.”
- The moment that dialogue ends, the barrier vanishes.
Who you need to talk to #
You can’t just wave at the NPCs; you have to actually trigger their full introductions. According to Gametaco, you must locate these three specific characters:
- Blaidd: The half-wolf warrior who acts as Ranni’s primary servant.
- Preceptor Seluvis: The sorcerer who is often more interested in his own schemes.
- War Counselor Iji: The giant blacksmith who provides essential lore and upgrades.
If any of them are missing or you can’t find them, make sure you have fully agreed to serve Ranni first, as they only appear as spirits after that agreement. If Blaidd specifically is not spawning, try resting at the Site of Grace at the base of the tower and checking again — some players report he only appears after a full reload of the area.
Common mistakes that keep you stuck #
I’ve seen a few players get stuck even after talking to the NPCs. The biggest mistake is failing to return to Ranni after the conversations. Talking to the three allies is only half the battle; Ranni is the one who actually lifts the barrier. You must go back up and trigger the specific line about her slumbering. If the wall is still there, go back downstairs and double-check that every single NPC has finished their dialogue.
